About Joannah Meltzer

Certified Background Check Care.com
Being present and helping others find joy in the most unexpected of places is a gift!
Hello! My name is Joannah. Born and raised in NY, I went to college in Washington, D C where I earned a BA in American Literature. Post college, I lived in the West Village of Manhattan for over 25 years and ran a small successful recruiting firm specializing in technology and law/legal professions.
Almost five years ago, I moved to NJ to spend time with my favorite aunt who was battling breast cancer. She had long term care and ultimately in home hospice care. I decided early on that my responsibility was to bring her joy whenever possible as her health declined. We did lots of little things together like trips to the beauty parlor, nail salon, grocery store and lunch at the diner. Sometimes we hosted small lunch parties at her house where I would whip up a nice meal so her friends could come over and visit when she was not feeling well enough to go out.
The lessons I learned from the time I spent with my Aunt Barbara taught me things about myself and about life that I now consider invaluable. Helping someone live their best life in any circumstance is a kindness and a privilege.

Benefits of Companion Care

Leaning on a Care Companion to spend time and offer assistance to a loved one is a gift. Encouragement by a Care Companion who promotes continued engagement in life’s daily chores, errands and activities will help a loved one feel supported and less isolated. If physically able, encouraging them to take a trip to the market, hair salon, a friends house or a local town event, will help promote feelings of connectivity to the community and provide them with their own stories to share with family and friends.
Enlisting a Care Companion to accompany a loved one who doesn’t drive anymore, doesn’t feel comfortable driving alone, or going for a walk on their own will give them the confidence to continue to engage or reengage with some activities that most of us take for granted. Having a calendar of events and/or appointments (reasons to get dressed) will provide your loved one with a daily sense of purpose and promote feelings of hopefulness which will add to their quality of life.
Finding the right Care Companion can be a stressful process. As the Care Manager, you want your loved one to feel safe and supported while continuing to find joy in every day life. My style of care addresses all of these benchmarks. Every client care plan is customized and tailored to the individual’s needs. When spending time with your loved one, they will have my undivided attention without distractions from cellphones and other personal matters. I meet with any potential new client and their Care Manager for a complimentary visit before we agree to work together to determine if it’s a good fit. My care style is upbeat yet low key and I always wait for cues that dictate how much conversation, physical contact and overall engagement is desired during our time together.
